Most of us don’t know a whole lot about car insurance procedures and practices. So when you’ve ready to buy a brand new Chevy or Cadillac or a Joe Bowman used car, you’ll want to brush up on the finer points of a policy.
Whatever car insurance policy you choose, remember, the idea isn’t to buy the cheapest or best policy. Instead, you want one that offers the best value for your money.
With that in mind, we’ve put together 7 crucial questions to include when car insurance shopping.
“Will my policy cover other drivers who drive my vehicle?”
Obviously, your policy will cover you while you drive. But what about when your best friend borrows it to run an errand? Or you sister borrows it to run to the grocery store? What happens if they have an accident? What happens if you have an accident driving someone else’s vehicle?
How these situations are handled depend upon your insurance carrier and the laws of your state. Don’t assume you will be covered just because you have car insurance.
“What additional coverage do I need besides the state required minimums?”
Keeping your premium costs to an absolute minimum means getting only the amount of coverage required by your state. However, there are add-on’s that are well worth the investment.
For example, un-/under-insured motorist insurance, or UM. This coverage will cover the cost of car repairs if you’re hit by a driver who is either under insured or in uninsured.
Personal injury protection is another inexpensive add-on that pays for your medical expenses up to a certain limit as well as lost income if you are hit by another driver.
“If I increase the deductible, how much will my premium be affected?”
Car insurance agencies offer consumers lower insurance premiums by increasing the deductible. But is that a good strategy for you?
You may save $200 per year by increasing the deductible from $500 to $1,000. However, you will also be increasing your own personal risk should an accident occur.
That means you will be responsible for paying $1,000 on a claim instead of $500. If you’re good at saving money and you usually keep $1,000 in savings for emergencies, then this would probably be a good strategy. If not, you may want to consider the lower deductible.
“Will my policy include gap coverage?”
This type of coverage usually is required when you lease a car. However, if you have a loan on your vehicle, you may want to have it. Car insurance policies usually pay the book value of your vehicle.
If the loan on your vehicle is higher than the book value, you could end up paying the difference between the two if your car is totaled. Gap coverage pays that difference.
“How will my car be repaired following a car accident?”
This question relates to the types of parts used to repair your vehicle. You want to find out if the repairs will be completed using brand new parts. If so, up to what age of the vehicle? Or, will repairs be made using secondhand parts?
Your coverage may be less expensive using secondhand parts, but you have to consider this. Do you mind having 10-year-old car parts in your three-year-old vehicle?
“Does my policy include towing and roadside assistance? Are those service available 24/7?”
Towing is generally available for a mechanical breakdown or an accident. Because both happen without warning, insurance is good to have.
Roadside assistance is valuable because it provides assistance should you have a flat tire or need your battery jumped. This type of coverage can save you considerable money instead of calling a local mechanic.
Having all these services available 24/7 to you is also very important. You won’t pay as much out-of-pocket costs in the event of an emergency.
“Will my job affect my coverage?”
Certain types of work are excluded from your policy. For example, using your car in sales work or any kind of delivery job. If you do have an accident, you will not be covered.
Before any person buying a vehicle from Joe Bowman Auto Plaza leaves our office, we call their insurance agent to make sure coverage is in place. We never want anyone to leave without having coverage in place.

How Bad Is It To Let My Car Idle For A Long Time?

You’ve probably heard it both ways with car idling. No, it’s not harmful to let your car run for a while. And yes, it’s bad. Don’t do it!
Our Harrisonburg auto center is here to clear up those misconceptions. The truth is that car idling isn’t really harmful to your car, but it does have consequences.
First of all, idling your car is a gas waster. Letting your car run for just two minutes is the equivalent of driving one mile. Worse, letting your vehicle idle for more than an hour will burn almost a gallon of gas.
So, unless you literally have money to burn, burning gas that’s not taking you anywhere is wasteful.
Car idling burns oil. The longer you leave your engine running means the more oil that has to circulate and burn. That means more frequent oil changes.
It’s bad for the environment. We all need to do our part to reduce the toxic load on our planet. And, choosing to let your car idle causes your exhaust system to produce more emissions into the air, which contributes to air pollution.
Equally concerning is how car idling, over time, decreases your vehicle’s performance. It causes the spark plugs, head gasket, and cylinder rings to deteriorate and eventually stop working. And it drains your battery because the battery cannot recharge, causing it to strain.
Lastly, as a safety precaution, never idle your car in a confined space. Automobile emissions create carbon monoxide poisoning, which kills! Make sure the area is well-ventilated and open.
Harrisonburg Auto Service Tips for Avoiding Car Idling
To reduce the wear and tear on the environment as well as reducing fuel consumption and emission production, our Chevy certified mechanics recommend the following:
• If you’re stuck in traffic, turn off the car. Traffic accidents or bumper to bumper traffic are grueling. But you might as well make it as easy as possible for both you and your vehicle. Chill!
• Roll down the windows. Or, simply go inside if you’re waiting on someone. If you can’t do that, let Mother Nature do the talking. Roll down those windows and enjoy a breeze.
• Upgrade to a hybrid vehicle. Hybrids shut down the gasoline engine when it comes to a stop and the electric motor kicks in. That’s a double win because it helps reduce fuel consumption as well as emission production.
Avoiding excessive car idling is just another way to extend the life of your car. Make it a practice to turn the engine off when you’re not actually driving the vehicle.
You’ll get many more years of service if you do!
From regular vehicle maintenance to car repairs, the highly qualified mechanics at Joe Bowman Chevrolet are there to keep your car in tiptop condition and on the road longer!

Whether you buy a used car or truck or a brand new one, one thing’s for sure. Your engine is the heartbeat of your vehicle!
Investing in a newer or new vehicle is simply that, an investment. Do everything you can to extend the life of your car by avoiding these 5 common causes of engine problems.
Lack of Regular Oil Changes
Your engine has a LOT of moving and rotating parts. That’s why constant lubrication is a must. Driving degrades engine oil causing it to lose its lubricating ability and to carbonizes under high temperatures.
Driving your vehicle well past the regular oil interval date causes friction to increase. That, in turn, causes mechanical wear, which causes slow engine contamination with carbon deposits or sludge.
The engine ventilation system then carries these carbon deposits into the engine intake, building up inside the throttle body and the valves. Your engine will perform poorly with a lack of power or a rough idle. You’ll see the Check Engine Light come on and experience various driveability issues.
Changing the oil regularly keeps your engine clean and well lubricated. And, it saves you money!
Driving with Low Oil Levels
An engine’s oil level drops over time because some of the oil gets burned in the engine itself. Driving your car with low levels of oil can cause serious damage like throwing a rod.
Check the oil at least once per month. It only takes a few minutes and can spare you hundreds if not thousands of dollars in expensive repairs!
Engine Overheating
Engine coolant leaks are common in many cars! For that reason alone, it’s important to keep your engine coolant level full. Check it regularly.
Remember, do not open the radiator or coolant overflow reservoir while the engine is hot because the coolant is under pressure. If you notice the engine temperature rising above normal, get your mechanic to check it before the engine overheats.
Choosing the Wrong Oil
While many of the newer cars now require synthetic oil for the engine to run properly, it doesn’t always make sense to use it. If you have a high mileage vehicle, it’s not always worth the extra cost.
Synthetic oil is “thinner.” Filling a high mileage engine with synthetic oil is more likely to cause it to develop leaks or to run noisier.
However, for low mileage or turbo engines, driving under severe conditions like high temperatures, driving long intervals or carrying excessive loads, synthetic oils make sense.
Choose wisely for the year and number of miles on your vehicle for extended engine wear!
Excessive Idling
Idling your car or truck longer than is necessary causes it to burn more oil. The longer you let your engine run, the more motor oil circulates and burns. That means spending more money on more frequent oil changes.
Excessive idling also decreases your car’s performance. Given enough time, it can cause deterioration of spark plugs, head gaskets, and cylinder rings. And lastly, it drains your car battery. Don’t do it!

Tire Types: What’s the Best Tire for Your Car?

There have been a lot of advances in technology, but tread life is still finite, and it still varies by car and tire type, road and weather conditions, and driving aggressiveness.
When it comes time to replace your tires, it pays to know your options. Usually, you’ll want to replace your tires with something similar. But you’ll also want tires that excel in the areas that matter most to you. For example, braking, ride comfort, noise, and braking.
Each type of tire comes with its own set of pros and cons. Here’s a quick rundown to help you decide what’s right for you.
All-Season Car Tires
These tires fit everything from small cars to light duty SUV’s to pickup trucks. Made for car owners who want year-round traction, long tread wear, and a comfortable ride, all-season tires generally lack precision handling and the grip of performance tires.
Typical wheel size: 14″-18″
Performance All-Season Car Tires
Provides year-round grip and is tuned for enthusiastic driving. These tires have a higher speed rating than the standard all-season tires. Plus, they generally offer better handling and braking than with regular all-season tires.
Typical wheel size: 15″-20″
Ultra-High-Performance Tires (UHP)
These all-season and summer ultra-high performance tires are designed to fit sporty vehicles and upscale sedans. UHP’s provide responsive steering and good handling for wet and dry weather conditions. However, the compromise is the tread wear and ride. Not intended for cold weather and they won’t grip in icy, snowy conditions.
Typical wheel size: 17″-22″
All Season Truck Tires
Designed for the heavy loads that a pickup truck or SUV can move. These tires are well-rounded and perform very well in most conditions.
Typical wheel size: 15″-22″
All-Season SUV Tires
Designed specifically for the modern SUV. Tuned for lightweight duty towing, performance, and off-road capabilities.
Typical wheel size: 16″-20″
All-Terrain Truck Tires
Made for more heavy duty applications. The more rugged tread provides added traction on unpaved and snowy roads. Suitable for light off-road use and paved roads.
Typical wheel size: 15″-20″
Winter/Snow Tires
Offer superior grip for stopping, going, and cornering in cold, inclement weather. Because the tread is specifically designed to bite into snow and ice, the rubber stays pliable in freezing temperatures. Winter/snow tires do take longer to stop than all-season tires on cleared roads.
Typical wheel size: 14″-22″
Performance Winter/Snow Tires
These tires generally fit cars using UHP all-season and summer tires. They are seasonal replacements for vehicles providing improved cold weather grip.
Typical wheel size: 17″-20″
Truck Winter/Snow Tires
Designed specifically for SUV’s and pickups. Always buy in a set of four for optimum stop, go, and cornering functions.
Typical wheel size: 15″-20″
No matter what type of tire you choose, to extend their life, make sure you get your tires serviced regularly. At Joe Bowman Chevrolet, we have certified Chevrolet mechanics that can handle all aspects of your mechanical needs!

Hard to believe but we are in the thick of another holiday season! That means packing up to head to grandma’s house. But that’s not the hardest part.
For long distance driving, the hardest part is the road itself. Highway hypnosis can be quite common if you haven’t prepped in advance. In fact, more than 60% of drivers say they have gotten behind the wheel while drowsy! That’s a considerable risk to take for you and your family.
Before the trip, you’ll make sure your vehicle is in good running order and fueled with gas. Why not get prepare yourself with these 7 easy-to-do and valuable long distance driving tips?
Plan Ahead
Get a good night’s sleep. Relying on coffee to get you to your destination is risky and unwise. If you’re leaving early in the morning, make sure you go to bed earlier than usual to get enough sleep. Plan your route and know where you stop along the way to refuel, eat, and rest a bit.
Fuel Your Body
Bring some healthy foods that are packed with vitamins and snack on them along the way. To maintain alertness, pack some almonds and carrots. Skip fast food and give your body real fuel to help you arrive at your destination safely.
Stay Hydrated
For maximum energy and alertness, keep hydrated. Of course, you may need to make more pitstops, but then again, that breaks up the driving and also keeps you more alert.
Plan Your Stops
This one is crucial! Plan times for you to get out of the car and stretch your legs, preferably every 2 hours. You can time it so that you view interesting places or stop to get a good meal.
Allow Ample Drive Time
Holidays can mean a lot of rushing around. Just don’t make your trip a rush job! Allow plenty of time for driving, refueling and rest stops. The drive will be a lot more pleasurable that way.
Share Drive Time
If you can, share the drive time with someone else. You will be far less likely to get tired when you do to take the wheel. It’s highly recommended that you don’t drive more than 10 hours in one day! It’s just too hard on you physically and mentally.
Chew Gum, Sniff, and Listen to Music
Chewing gum increases circulation and alertness. Keep a pack handy! Keep some peppermint on hand, too, and sniff it when you need a boost. It’s a pleasant, all-natural pick-me-up that reduces fatigue and increases alertness.
Turn on the radio. Or, bring along music that will get your blood pumping and help to keep you alert.
At Joe Bowman Chevy, we encourage you to take these important precautions when driving. And, make sure you get your vehicle serviced before you hit the road. Both of these tips are lifesavers!
7 Car Buying Tips for Finding the Right Vehicle

Whether you’re new to buying a car or haven’t purchased one in a long time, it can be hard to know where to begin!
All it really takes is a little research and planning to find the right new or used car for your lifestyle. And that’s key. Your research will determine whether buying a new car, a pre-owned vehicle, or leasing is right for you.
Let’s take a closer look.
Assess Your Lifestyle Needs
What’s “right” for you depends on what you expect your vehicle to do for you. Are you a person who likes practicality in a car? Do you want a vehicle that meshes with an outdoorsy lifestyle? Do you need a vehicle with lots of cargo space? Have a family?
Think about what works for you, and ask yourself these questions:
• Is fuel economy important?
• Do you need an all-wheel drive vehicle?
• Are there certain “must-have” features like backup camera, Apple CarPlay, leather seats, that you want?
• What safety features are important?
• What kind of cargo capacity do you need?
• Will you need to use children’s car seats?
• How much parking or garage space do you have?
These kinds of questions will get you thinking more deeply about what you really need from a vehicle.
Set Your Budget
If you’re financing your car, you’ll need to set a budget of what you can afford each month. The general rule of thumb is that your car payment shouldn’t exceed 15% of your monthly take home pay.
If you’re leasing, make it less than 10% of your take home pay. Don’t forget to factor in fuel and insurance costs too. To get you started, check out Edmunds’ auto affordability calculator. It’s a great tool!
Lease or Buy?
Leasing and buying each have their own pros and cons. The question is which one is right for you? Leasing allows you to drive a more expensive car for less money.
Most repairs are covered under the factory warranty and you won’t have to hassle with trade-ins. Buying a car means there are no mileage penalties and you can modify the car to your own tastes.
What’s more, car expenses will be lower in the long run if you keep the vehicle for a long time. Again, it comes down to lifestyle choices.
Costs of Ownership
Some cars are cheaper to buy upfront but then are most expensive to own. Will the car you want to buy depreciate more quickly? Will it cost more to maintain and insure?
Before you make the financial commitment, make sure you do yourself a favor and estimate the long term ownership costs.
Finding Cars for Sale
It’s not difficult to find cars for sale these days. And you don’t have to go to a dealership first. You can browse Joe Bowman used cars online as well as our new cars, trucks, and SUV’s.
Find what you want then come in and test drive it at our Harrisonburg Chevrolet dealership. All of our used vehicles must pass a 75-point inspection or they will not be listed for sale. Plus, we back up our used car commitment with either a 30 or 90-day warranty.
There are many cars offered for sale privately as well. You’ll want to thoroughly do your research on the vehicle and get it checked out by your mechanic to ensure it is in good condition.
Take it for A Test Drive
We recommend that you test drive at least three different vehicles. Why limit your options to just one car? Schedule an appointment or several appointments for test driving. This will make your car comparison much easier.
When you do a test drive, try to re-create the same conditions you would have in everyday life. Are you a commuter? In-city driver? Try to test drive for those situations.
Also, be sure to listen to the engine, see how the vehicle handles on bumps, tight corners, and test the brakes.
Finally, after driving several vehicles, the choice should be clear. If it isn’t, then sleep on it! It’s way better to take a little longer to get the right car than to experience buyer’s remorse.

7 Winter Tire Maintenance Tips for Longer Wear

We don’t have to tell you how important your tires are to your car. They are all that’s between you and the road! That’s why taking care of them requires attention seasonally, with the exception of tire pressure. It should be checked monthly.
With summer behind us, it’s time to prepare your tires for the next season, winter driving. Here are our 7 tire maintenance tips to help you get the most out of your tires and to keep you safe on the road.
Proper Tire Inflation
Tires must be properly inflated to perform well and to last a long time. Over or under inflation may cause your vehicle not to brake, steer or accelerate properly.
Check your tire pressure at least once each month but do it when tires are cold. If you’re not sure what the proper tire pressure is for your car, there’s a vehicle information placard sticker that lists that information. Usually you’ll find it on the driver’s side front or rear door.
Rotate Your Tires
To extend tire wear and improve performance, rotate them every 7500 miles or every 6 months. Check your owner’s manual for your specific recommendation.
Get A Wheel Alignment
About every 15,000 miles, you’ll want to get a wheel alignment to avoid uneven tread wear. Potholes, railroad crossings, and the like, can knock your tires out of alignment.
Don’t Mix and Match Tires
On the surface, it may seem to be cost effective to replace one or two tires at a time. However, mismatched tires can cause more problems than they are worth such as uneven or rapid tread wear, even mechanical problems!
Tire Balancing
Unbalanced tires can lead to premature or rapid tread wear. Get your tires balanced every time you rotate or change your tires. Or when you buy new tires.
Replace Tires as Needed
Pay attention to the tread wear to know when they need replacing. Do the penny test for an accurate read on the health of your tires. With Lincoln’s head upside down, place it in the center groove of the tire. If you can see his head, it’s time to replace them.
Store Spare Tires the Right Way
Store out of season tires by first cleaning them, making sure they are free of grease, gas, or any other substance that could deteriorate the rubber. If you’re storing your tires inside, keep the area clean, cool, dark, and away from direct sunlight or heat.
If you’re storing them outside, keep tires raised off of the ground. Use waterproof coverings with holes to prevent moisture from building up.
Of all the seasons, winter can be the most brutal. As your GMC dealer here in Harrisonburg, we encourage you to take these tips to heart. They will help you get safely through the cold weather ahead.
And if you need any assistance with buying new tires or tire maintenance, consider the Joe Bowman service department. Our certified Chevy mechanics work with all types of cars and trucks.
They can fix you right up!
How the Kelley Blue Book Works

Les Kelley, the owner of a successful used car dealership in the mid-teens of the 20th century, created lists of the cars he wanted to buy and how much he would pay for them. Then he began to send these lists to other banks and dealers.
It became so valuable, that he eventually published the first Blue Book in 1926. At that time, it was just a price guide with a list of cars and their accompanying prices.
Today, the Kelley Blue Book is a guide for used and new cars, classic cars that date back to the 1940’s, and motorcycles and recreational vehicles. That’s 100 years as a respected resource guide for car dealers around the country as well as consumers!
A lot of the Kelley car information is free on the company’s site. And all of its information pertains only to vehicles sold here in the States. So how can you use it to help you buy your next car?
Here’s a quick rundown.
Kelley Blue Book New Car Guide
Thinking of buying a new car? The New Car Guide from the Kelley Company contains pricing information on cars for the current model and year, such as:
• Dealer’s cost
• Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP)
• Any extra costs such as shipping
• Options for pricing schedules that buyers can choose
Kelley Blue Book Used Car Guide
This guide contains information on car values from the last 15 years. For example:
• Trade-in price-the price a dealer would offer for your trade-in
• Retail price-the price you can expect to pay at a used car dealership
• Private sale price-the price you can expect to get it if you sold the car yourself to someone else
The Used Car Guide also has tables and charts to calculate the price of the car based on its condition, mileage, and optional components. And it describes how those factors influence the total value of the vehicle.
There’s a separate Blue Book for older cars, and one for motorcycles and RV’s.
The Blue Book might have started out as a resource just for dealers, but it’s now a valuable car buying guide for everyone. It’s easy to use and even includes a “How to use this book” section for information relating to optional equipment and mileage.
We rely on KBB and we expect our customers to do the same.

Used Car Buying Guide: 5 Essential Steps

It’s exciting to buy a vehicle, whether it’s new or pre-owned! Here at Bowman Chevrolet, we’ve found over the years that buyers who come prepared are the most satisfied ones.
Whether you buy from us or from another Harrisonburg car dealership, we encourage you to be an informed buyer. Here’s what we’ve found that makes for the happiest used car owners.
Do Your Research
We have a lot of used cars on our lot with many makes and models. That’s why walking in cold without knowing what you want can be overwhelming!
Do a little research before you come in to the dealership. Know what you’re going to use the car for, what kind of gas mileage you’re looking for, and your budget. This will help you narrow down your choices.
Get prequalified. You can do it right from our site. We even have a secure online application that determines the best financing rates and options for your auto purchase.
Bring A Second Person Along
Having someone with you can help you through the buying process. They can ask questions you might not have thought of. Their questions may even prompt you to think of other questions to ask! And it will lessen your overwhelm.
Know Whether You Want to Buy or Lease
Depending on your budget, you may want to lease a pre-owned car. It just depends on how much you’ll be driving the vehicle because lease contracts limit the number of miles you can drive in a year. Then again, financing a quality used car may be the better route. Bottom line, know which path is better for you.
Know What “As Is” Means
When you buy a vehicle “as is” means you are buying it in its current condition. That could mean unexpected, additional repairs down the line. Joe Bowman Chevrolet used cars have all passed a 75-point inspection to be listed for sale on our lot.
Our certified Chevrolet mechanics have thoroughly examined the vehicle and made repairs, if any were warranted. Then we back up our commitment with either a 30 or 90-day warranty, depending on the year of the vehicle and the mileage.
Take an Extended Test Drive
By that we mean, take the vehicle for a spin down the block to see how it drives. But also take it out on the highway to see how well the car accelerates. Park the car to see how well it handles.
Take it for a drive on a secondary road to see how well it performs with the additional vibration. As far as possible, get a good feel for the kind of car you’re purchasing.
Follow these 5 steps and you’ll find that you’re much more at ease with your new car purchase!
Find your quality pre-owned car at Joe Bowman Auto Plaza.
