We’ve seen it time and again. When a person buys a new car, they think they don’t need to do anything to it. Remember, you just invested a lot of money into your vehicle, so you want to preserve your investment, enhancing the resale value.

Maintaining both the interior and exterior is important, but this time, we want to talk about how to clean the car’s exterior.

Washing Your New Car

The first thing you need to know is that the number one cause of swirl marks on cars is car washing! To protect the paint, always use a high quality mitt, car wash shampoo, and microfiber drying towels.

Don’t use a detergent because it can strip your car’s wax and cause stains. Before washing, you want to make sure the paint is cool to the touch. Rinse your car thoroughly; this will loosen and remove harmful dirt and debris, helping to prevent those dreaded swirl marks.

Use one bucket for your car wash mix and the other for rinsing. Again, another protection against swirl marks. Wash and rinse in sections. This will keep the soap from drying on the paint. Don’t forget to wash the tires and the wheels. They pick up a ton of dust, grime, and dirt.

Over time, brake dust can harm both your new car paint and the wheels. Scrub away!

Drying Your New Car

Don’t let your car air dry; it will leave water spots. Instead, use detailing cloths and chamois. Paint cleaners can help remove stubborn offenders like bugs and tree sap from your vehicle. You can also buy an abrasive but begin with a light one and then work up, if you need to.

Thought about claying your vehicle? Most new car owners don’t think their vehicles need claying, but think about it. Your new car has experienced many types of environments just to get to you.

Here’s what we recommend for short term checkups:

Air Filter

Because your air filter regulates air flow to your engine, you want to make sure that your air filter is doing its job properly. Check to make sure it’s keeping out debris and particulates. Doing so will increase fuel efficiency, decrease emissions, and help to ensure the life of your engine. Just follow the instructions in your owner’s manual.

Oil and Coolant Levels

Every few gas fill-ups—especially if you’re taking a longer road trip—inspect both the oil and coolant levels. You want to perform the check when the engine is cool. Low oil and coolant levels left unchecked can lead to engine problems.

Oil & Oil Filter

Keeping your oil clean is vital to your engine’s good health. It performs a multitude of functions from the lubrication of moving parts, acting as a sealant against dirt and debris, to cooling the engine (mentioned above), all of which, reduces engine wear and tear and preventing engine corrosion.

How often should you change your oil and oil filter? That depends on your driving habits and what your owner’s manual recommends.

Tire Pressure and Tread Depth

It goes without saying that well-maintained tires are integral to safe driving! But it’s also important for fuel efficiency. Check tire pressure monthly and before you travel. Carrying an extra load? Check your tire pressure. Remember, during cold months, tire pressure drops one pound with every 10 degree drop in pressure. That’s why a seasonal check is good, too.

Rotate Tires

A good way to extend the life of your tires is to have them regularly rotated. This will help to balance out tread wear, helping to prevent vibration and noise problems. Tread wear patterns can vary from back and front tires, another reason for regular rotation.

Headlights, Parking Lights, Brake and Turn Signals

Visually inspect your vehicle at least once per month, including those easy-to-overlook items like turn signals, brakes, parking lights and headlights.

Wax Your Used Car

Waxing your car every six months doesn’t just keep it shiny. It helps to keep the paint in good shape and reduces the chance of rust. Environmental factors like UV lights and ozone light as well as the usual suspects of dust, salt, and sand can cause microscopic damage. Waxing can help minimize damage with a protective seal.

Now for those long-term checkups:

Serpentine Belt

This essential belt powers your alternator, power steering pump, and AC compressor. Make sure there are not cracks or any other sign of wear and tear. Replace as recommended by your owner’s manual. But definitely replace immediately if cracked or damaged.

Transmission Fluid

Avoid costly transmission damage or replacement! Check the transmission fluid according to manufacturer’s recommendations.

Front/Rear Differential

Your differential splits the power, or torque, from the engine and sends it to the tires. If you have a front or rear wheel drive vehicle, there is only one differential. For all-wheel and 4-wheel drive vehicles there is a front and rear differential. You could even have a center differential.

Just like the other parts of your vehicle, the differential(s) need proper lubrication. Get it inspected by our service department and change the fluid per manufacturer instructions.

Transfer Case Fluid

For all-wheel and 4-wheel drive vehicles, the transfer case shifts power from the transmission to the axles. Check the transfer case fluid to make sure it’s leak-free and properly filled. It’s recommended to have a service professional perform this job.

Spark Plugs

If your spark plugs aren’t functioning optimally, the engine will lose power and won’t run properly. Have a professional check your spark plugs and replace as necessary or per the recommendations in your owner’s manual.

Shocks and Struts

An essential part of your vehicle’s steering system, shocks and struts control the impact and rebound when your vehicle passes over bumps in the road. Get them checked every 50,000 miles. If you notice a decrease in smoothness, or worse, a loss of control when driving, bring it in to have it serviced.

Coolant Fluid Exchange

Having your coolant system regularly flushed will help to rid it of contaminants that build up inside. It also ensures that your radiator is filled to the proper level. Check your owner’s manual for how often this should be performed.

Transmission

If you’re driving a 4 x 4 off road, the transmission is getting seriously taxed. Differentials

Diesel Trucks: Check Glow Plugs

Diesel engines compress heat to ignite the engine. However, they don’t burn hot on their own. That’s where glow plugs come in. They give your engine that extra push needed to get fuel burning. Check glow plugs regularly, but especially during cold winter months. Your owner’s manual will guide you on how often to replace them.

Lean, Mean, and Clean

Living an active lifestyle isn’t difficult when you live in a place like Harrisonburg, in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley.  There are plenty of trails for the novice hiker and adventurous sort alike, and we’ve compiled a list of the best 8 for you to check out!

Edith J. Carrier Arboretum
Located at 780 University Boulevard, the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum is one of Harrisonburg’s most well-known, but still hidden, treasures.  Both an arboretum and botanical gardens, this is a great place that will appeal to the whole family.  Kids will love the abundance of trees, flowers, and wildlife that are prevalent at this destination. Here you’ll find more than two miles of hiking trails perfect for an afternoon trek.

Hillandale Park
Next up on the list, and also located in Harrisonburg, is Hillandale Park. You’ll find it at 801 Hillandale Ave. The ‘Burg’s largest park, Hillandale sits on more than 70 acres and boasts some of the best trails available.  There are designated spots for hiking, biking, and jogging.  There’s even an easier, 1.3 mile hike located just off the parking lot where you pull in!

Purcell Park
Last on the list of spots you’ll find in Harrisonburg is Purcell Park, located at 41 Monument Ave. While not quite as expansive in size as Hillandale, Purcell is still a larger park that sits on 67 acres.  Another great choice for the kids, this park hosts a 1.5 mile hiking trail perfect for an afternoon out with the family.

The Shenandoah National Park takes up a great deal of land throughout the Shenandoah Valley, and hosts some of our favorite hiking spots.

Shenandoah National Park – Dark Hollow Falls
One of our personal favorites for the beautiful scenery, Dark Hollow Falls is located on the Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Park. The trailhead is located at mile 50.7 on the Skyline Drive, and is well marked.  While the complete trail is just over a mile, with the steep climbs back up, this is definitely a moderate hike. Don’t let that deter you, though, the beautiful waterfalls you’ll encounter along the way are well worth it!

Shenandoah National Park – Fox Hollow Trail
Located at mile post 4.6 in the Shenandoah National Park, Fox Hollow Trail is a great hike to take your kids on! A shorter hike, only 1.2 miles long, you’ll be mesmerized by the scenery.

Reddish Knob
Located west of Harrisonburg, in the George Washington National Forest, Reddish Knob is a local favorite.  It’s an incredibly long hike, but well worth the time investment for the 360 degree views of Virginia and West Virginia! Known around here as the ‘parking lot in the sky,’ Reddish Knob isn’t a hike you want to miss out on.

Fridley Gap
Also located in the George Washington National Forest, Fridley Gap offers a long, strenuous hike along with a swimming hole for the optimal way to cool off after a long hike.  If you’re a seasoned hiker, Fridley Gap’s 6.2 moderate to strenuous hike is the spot for you.

Old Rag Mountain
Last on our list, and not for the faint of hearth is the Valley’s favorite Old Rag Mountain.  This one is an all-day hike, taking about 7-8 hours to complete.  If you undertake this endeavor, you’ll surely be wowed by the breathtaking views and scenery.

Documents to Bring When Buying A Car

• Driver’s License – This one is pretty basic, but if you plan on test driving your vehicle before finalizing the purchase, you’ll need to bring your valid Driver’s License. While you should have this document with you at all times anyway, it’s especially important to remember it when making a vehicle purchase.
• Proof of Insurance – This is another basic one.  If you plan on purchasing a vehicle, you’ll need to make sure you have insurance prior to the purchase.  We highly recommend contacting your Insurance Agent in advance to see what is required to add a new vehicle.
• Proof of Address – In order to purchase a vehicle, you’ll need to provide residency in the state you reside.  A valid Driver’s License is usually sufficient, but other forms may be required.  Other acceptable forms of proof could be things like pay stubs, utility bills, voter registration card, bank documents, etc.

If You Have a Trade

Dealerships are always looking to add quality pre-owned vehicles to their inventory, and are often willing to pay top dollar for them! If you are planning on trading in your vehicle in order to purchase a new one, be sure to grab the following items before heading out:

• Valid Registration – In order to trade in a vehicle, it must have valid registration
• Title (if applicable) – If you hold the title to your vehicle, the dealership will require this documentation when trading it in.
• Loan Account Information (if applicable) – If your vehicle is still financed, you’ll need to have your loan account number or information with you in order to get your payoff amount.  The dealership will need this information in order to finalize the trade-in of your vehicle.
• Owner’s Manual – Holding onto this document is a tremendous help to the dealership staff and future owners.
• Spare Keys – Save yourself an extra trip back to the dealership, and be sure to bring both keys when you test drive!

Gas has gotten a lot more expensive over the years so it’s no wonder you want to squeeze every bit you can into your gas tank.

But the simple act of trying to get more value for your buck is actually hurting your car.

First of all, topping off your gas tank causes damage to your vehicle’s charcoal filter. It can overwhelm your evaporation system and break something, or it can cause a hazardous leak because of the excess system pressure.

It also causes a pressure build in the tank which floods the carbon filter vapor collection system. Remember, it’s only made for vapor, not liquids.

The overflow can then affect your vehicle’s performance and possible cause engine damage.

If you do damage your car’s vapor recovery system from topping off your gas tank, the vehicle will not protect people or the environment from harmful vapors.

Overfilling the gas tank sends all of the excess fuel to the charcoal/evaporation canister. That kills the life of that canister. And with a carbon filter price tag between $200-$1500, that’s a costly repair for saving a few more pennies at the pump.

You don’t even want to go there on the cost for a new engine.
